Red Tag Fly Tying
Red Tag fly-tying sessions aim to develop specific skills through guidance and assistance in a friendly environment. These sessions, open to all Club members, occur monthly at the club rooms. Volunteers, both tutors and assistants, share their wealth of knowledge with participants.
A tutor leads the session, offering step-by-step instruction. Assistants may distribute materials and provide one-on-one guidance as needed. Sessions run from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm, with setup assistance requested at 7:15 pm. A nominal participation fee covers material costs, which is used to reimburse the tutor’s purchase of materials and any surplus goes towards replacing club fly tying materials or tools.
NOVICE SESSIONS (2nd Wednesday of the Month) introduce basic skills, enabling participants to comfortably tie their own flies regularly. Emphasis is on building fly tying skills and understanding when and how to use specific fly patterns on the water.
Tutor’s Role:
Participant Tools: While the club provides fly tying vices and tools, participants are encouraged to bring their own if available.
Hands-On Practice: Participants follow the tutor’s step-by-step instructions to tie their own flies. Assistants answer questions, observe techniques, and offer constructive feedback.
Assistance Guidance: Assistants should refrain from demonstrating tying unless requested by participants. These sessions are for the participants to learn by practice.
Transition to Advanced Sessions: After attending sufficient novice sessions, participants can switch to advanced sessions with confidence.
ADVANCED SESSIONS (4th Wednesday of the Month) cater to those who are proficient in basic fly-tying techniques and materials. Club members with advanced skills also participate, enhancing their fly-tying experience.
Format: Similar to novice sessions, the tutor demonstrates fly pattern tying using communication aids. Expect additional variations and techniques for similar patterns, along with discussions on effective fishing methods.
Knowledge Sharing: Participants are encouraged to share their expertise with the group.
Assistants: While no designated assistants need to be present, participants benefit from the collective knowledge available.
Bring Your Own: Participants should bring their own vice and equipment if available.
SAFETY AND ETIQUETTE
All participants (tutors, assistants, and participants) must be mindful of safety precautions, including proper handling of hooks and safe use of chemicals like super glue and cutting tools.
To ensure an enjoyable experience for everyone, we emphasize proper etiquette:
Thanks to our dedicated volunteers, these sessions are possible for all Club members.
